Talk to county reps about tree and rainwater management programs. And, most important, connect with neighbors and buy a little lemonade from the next generation of Chesterbrook residents. We received information late this afternoon about an active transportation town hall which the Fairfax County police will run at the McLean Community Center tonight at 6 pm. We’ve been advised that Supervisor Bierman, and employees of FCDOT and VDOT will be in attendance. Here’s a link to the PowerPoint for the meeting.

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you so much for your interest and enthusiasm regarding the petition to request that Dominion Energy bury the power lines in Chesterbrook Woods. It has been great hearing from so many of you. We wanted to share a quick update to clarify the intent of the petition and help answer some initial questions.

The goal is simple: we want to show Dominion Energy that Chesterbrook Woods is eager to be added to their list of neighborhoods prioritized for underground power lines, helping us all avoid future power outages given the large number of outages we’ve had over the last few years. To get their attention, we need signatures from as many residents as possible.

Please note that signing this petition is simply a show of community interest. It does not commit you or your property to the project, nor does it give Dominion permission to begin any work.

If Dominion adds our neighborhood to their list, a formal process will follow where they will reach out to each resident individually for permission. This phase would include discussing necessary easements for equipment, like transformers, which only some properties would need and can easily be landscaped with shrubs.

A project like this typically requires near 100% agreement from the community to move forward. We will put together a detailed FAQ document at that stage to ensure everyone has the information they need to make the best decision.

Linked here is the website to Dominion’s Strategic Program which can answer some basic questions. This link is very informative and answers questions we have received except for this one raised by a few community members:

• Given outages that result from events in neighboring communities, how effective will this project be in providing consistent power to Chesterbrook Woods?

• Answer: Outages that are caused by fallen trees in our neighborhood will be eliminated. There have been two outage is year. Of course, outages in Dominion substations may occur and outages that occur in areas that feed Chesterbrook Woods may also disrupt power. We do not have information to know the resultant frequency.

For now, we invite you to add your name to the petition to help us get on Dominion Energy’s radar! Aside from the frequent outages, the large number of hanging wires, some of which are very low, are a growing public safety issue. The petition and signature pages are currently available at two neighborhood mailboxes:

Neighbors of Chesterbrook Woods,

We have all experienced numerous power outages the last few months at least two of which resulted from downed trees. The Board has a committee of volunteers who have been attempting to get Dominion Power to put our neighborhood on the list to bury our power cables. An attempt has been made through Dominion’s intermediary to make this request with no success so far.

There are a few reasons this is occurring. Without going into those details, the Committee plans to Petition Dominion with your help to put us on the list to bury our power cables. If there is to be any hope of success in this effort, we’ll need substantial participation in signing the petition. If you have reservations about the project please let one of the Committee members know and they will address your thoughts or seek an answer.

The Committee is asking you to sign the signature page of the petition. It will be attached to a couple of committee member’s mailboxes. See addresses below. Please include your address when signing. They’ll need your personal signature for the petition to be legitimate. If you are unable to come by let one of them know and they’ll make alternate arrangements.

Dear CWCA Residents-

Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT), is almost finished with the Chesterbrook Road sidewalk project from Forest Lane to 41st Street. The final pieces include milling and paving the sidewalk side of the street and then to re-stripe the center line and add crosswalk markings. The contractor began milling today.

While the contractor is doing the road work, they will close one lane on Chesterbrook from Forest up to 41st Street (work hours are approx 9:30 am – 3:30 pm Monday-Thurday and 9:30 am -2 pm on Friday). Once the work is completed, VDOT and Arlington county will need to do a final inspection. They expect the project to be completed in the next two weeks.

FCDOT knows that neighbors have been waiting a LONG time for the Chesterbrook sidewalk and appreciates your patience! Along with the new sidewalk which will allow pedestrians to walk from Forest to Glebe Rd, there will be two new crosswalks (one at Forest Lane and one at Brookside), and work was done to improve drainage underneath the road.

There is a second phase of the Chesterbrook sidewalk project that will connect Forest down to Maddux Lane and includes significant storm water upgrades. There is no time line yet for that piece but they are about to bid the project. More to come.

CWCA’sEnvironmental Committee Tree Planting Program

Dear Chesterbrook Woods Residents,

If you have been lamenting these hot summer days, a shade tree might just be the cure! Through the Chesterbrook Woods Environment Committee and McLean Trees Foundation program you can purchase beautiful native trees at a substantial savings AND have them planted for you. Please place your order by Saturday, July 11th.

CWCA Environmental Committee is able to offer Chesterbrook Woods residents the opportunity to buy sizeable elms, oaks and black gum trees delivered and planted for only $230 per tree.

That’s much less than you would pay at a local nursery. And it’s easy! Just pick a tree(s) and we’ll do the rest. A McLean Trees Foundation Specialist will come to your house to help you pick the right tree.

The trees are as substantial as the savings, standing 7-10 feet tall when planted and ready to grow a foot or more every year. All are native trees, very beneficial to birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.

It’s not only the birds and bees that will benefit. A tree in your yard can boost your home’s property value and beautify our neighborhood. Its shade can cool you in summer and can help reduce storm water runoff, reduce utility bills, cleanse the air and sequester carbon. And, of course, trees are beautiful. Over the last three years, the Tree Champions program has planted 78 native shade trees in Chesterbrook Woods.
