Dear Chesterbrook Woods Residents,

If you’ve thought of adding a beautiful shade tree to your yard, now is the time to act!

A new Black Gum, one of the many trees McLean Trees planted last year

Thanks to the McLean Trees Foundation, the CWCA Environmental Committee is able to offer Chesterbrook Woods residents the opportunity to buy sizeable elms, oaks and black gum trees delivered and planted for only $230 per tree.

That’s much less than you would pay at a local nursery. And it’s easy! Just pick a tree(s) and we’ll do the rest. A McLean Trees Foundation Specialist will come to your house to help you pick the right tree.

This opportunity is just one part of the McLean Trees Foundation’s decades-long effort to protect and restore McLean’s native tree canopy and to combat invasive plants and restore native habitats. You can read more about the McLean Trees Foundation here.

The trees are as substantial as the savings, standing 7-10 feet tall when planted and ready to grow a foot or more every year. All are native trees, very beneficial to birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.

It’s not only the birds and bees that will benefit. A tree in your yard can boost your home’s property value and beautify our neighborhood. Its shade can cool you in summer and can help reduce storm water runoff, reduce utility bills, cleanse the air and sequester carbon. And, of course, trees are beautiful. Over the last three years, the Tree Champions program has planted 78 native shade trees in Chesterbrook Woods.

An Unbeatable Opportunity to Plant a New Tree in Your Yard! Each household may purchase up to four trees.Click on the tree names below to see pictures and more information on the tree choices:

BLACK GUMAlso known as a tupelo tree, this beauty boasts glossy dark green leaves that turn a brilliant
red, with orange, yellow, and purple sometimes mixed in, in autumn.

AMERICAN ELMNew disease-resistant varieties mean that we can bring back this fast-growing American classic which once lined the streets of many towns and cities.

PIN OAKMore pyramidal in shape than other oaks, with branches that begin fairly close to the ground (which is good for screening),
this popular tree grows quickly.

NORTHERN RED OAK Despite its name, this tree is native to our area. It’s a fast grower with better fall color than most other oaks.

SWAMP WHITE OAK This relatively fast grower, is as its name suggests, tolerant of wet soil. It grows into a handsome pyramidal form in its youth, then the canopy broadens as it matures.

WHITE OAK The most majestic oak, with a broad, well-branched canopy, it is also the most beneficial to wildlife.

WILLOW OAKNotable for its slender willow-like leaves, this fast grower is well-suited to McLean’s poor soil.
